Still life paintings are yesterday’s Foodie Instagram

Foodie Instagram has a long history in still life paintings!

Foodie Instagram has a long history in still life paintings!

TLDR: still life paintings were yesterday’s ✨bling✨.

I love art history and I have to admit, I don’t mind a bit of foodie stuff on Instagram! Give me a photo of your food at a local restaurant I can put on my list, and you have my attention. But I adore The Memory Palace podcast much more than Instagram food photos, and with every episode I fall a little more in love with Nate DiMeo. I have been eating episodes up (punny) while working on the custom ceramic installation I’m creating- stay tuned for more on that. So let’s talk about how still life paintings are yesterday’s Foodie Instagram.

This episode, about the pineapple, explains SO much about painting history. Paintings, before the invention of the camera, were wealthy folk’s way of showing off. Kinda like the iPhone but hundreds of years earlier. And if you really think about it, they still are today. Wealthy people aren’t buying “paintings” (I put that in quotes because something with paint applied to a canvas by a computerized printer is NOT a painting!) from Target or Home Goods. They are either hiring an interior designer, art dealer or hunting for paintings in galleries themselves to find custom artwork. Like the person I’m doing a ceramic installation for this year. So it aligns, that still life paintings in Europe through the ages, were commissioned by wealthy folks to show off their prowess. We RICH. We can put food on the table.

They were all: I love food. But make it lush.

For the love of pineapple – this episode will enlighten you as to how it found its way onto tables across the world. But with the interwebs enlightening us more these days, I don’t recommend you chop off their tops and lay them in your garden, pretending to grow them… your neighbors will be on to you and know you’re not especially wealthy in knowledge about how a pineapple actually grows!

This 13 minute listen will make you LOL like the meme below: https://thememorypalace.us/one-fruit/
